Kibbe Museum on Illinois Stories

Mark McDonald recently visited the Kibbe to learn about our acquisition of the collection from the Museum of Funeral Customs.  This story is focused on the MFC collection, how it came to happen, how we did it, and future plans for exhibition.  The show airs on Thursday, 31 March at 7:30pm and Friday, 1 April at 6:30pm.  Don’t miss it!

  1. I saw the Illinois Stories telling about your acquiring the funeral museum material from Springfield. I believe it was mentioned that you were planning a Lincoln Exhibit in 2012. At the exhibit, would you have something about Lincoln’s funeral in 1865? If you plan something like this, wouldn’t it be appropriate to have a Lincoln Funeral March playing at the exhibit? There are a couple Lincoln Funeral Marches I know about. The one from this area is “Lincoln’s Funeral March”, by C. Hess, pub. in Cincinnati and St. Louis, 1865, as piano sheet music. It would also be appropriate to have a re-created brass band from The Civil War era playing a recording of this funeral march. Todd Cranston is director of the Vintage Brass Band at Univ. of Illinois-Springfield. I know him well and have furnished him music in the past. I would be willing to contact him about making a recording of Lincoln’s Funeral March for such a project. Also, I would be willing to arrange the music for his re-created brass band. I have arranged a great deal of music for other re-created Civil War era brass bands around the country. Let me know if this idea is appealing. Lavern Wagner
